Rhode Island has had an unusual amount of winter weather this season. Those of us spend 99.9% of the year here in Newport, finally see the light at the end of the tunnel every March. The staff at Pelham Court Hotel has been dreading this day for quite some time now. PCH's Courtyard Fountain Lady is done for the winter. We will not again enjoy the serenity of her white noise until next spring.

Although the fountain maybe quieting down, downtown Newport is full of holiday hustle and bustle! Last night our guests enjoyed the annual lighting of the downtown Christmas tree. The glistening tree is located next to Newport’s only ice skating rink. Rumor has it the rink will be up and running in no time, amusing kids of all ages. The famous Newport Mansions are looking their best this time of year, appointed with the finest of Christmas decor. The spectacular site continues to be a family tradition among our winter guests. Downtown shops and restaurants are holding holiday promotions and sales to entertain both visitors and locals alike. Live, Laugh and Love Newport

Newport is long known as the first summer playground for the rich and famous, but Newport is also known for its great entertainment venues as well. Now that August has finally arrived, many of our guests at Pelham Court seem to be taking advantage of all the events that Newport has to offer. This weekend marks the 50th anniversary of the Newport Folk Festival which will be followed by the Newport Jazz Festival August 7th and 8th. The Folk Festival this year features many famous artists including The Decemberists and the Jazz Fest boasts and amazing line up as well with the one and only Tony Bennett.

In addition to the great music events that Newport has long been known for, the summer comedy and concert series at the Newport Yachting Center is underway with popular performances already including Huey Lewis and the News as well as comedian Joel McHale. A bonus is also that all of these great attractions are located within just a few steps of the Pelham Court Hotel!

Some other events coming to Newport that we are looking forward include the Hall of Fame Champions Cup from August 20-23, located conveniently within just a mile from our property and includes eight tennis greats playing in four days of great grass court tennis action.

Newport is a great destination because it provides all tourists the ability to experience Newport culture on any budget. Many of the best Newport attractions are free and others can be experience at low costs year round. Taking a stroll on Cliff Walk or meandering through the historic hill district remains one of our favorite things to do on a sunny day.

The All New Pelham Court Hotel

Well, yes, we already are a a brand new property constructed last summer, but we are still making changes and the construction is finished!

As of early this month, the Pelham Court Hotel condos have been completed! The four new additions to our property include two new one-bedroom suites with balconies, a two story two-bedroom suite and an impressive three story, three bedroom suite with three and a half bathrooms.

Aside from our new rooms, we have redecorated our courtyard to include a array of beautiful flowers and plants as well as two new tables to enjoy coffee or breakfast in the "aire libre".

Earth Day 2009!

With Earth Day right around the corner we at Pelham Court Hotel would like to extend to our fellow Bloggers one of our favorite Earth Day recipes! Celebrate the planet's natural delights by preparing a batch of these sweet snacks packed with a harvest of ingredients from all around our precious earth.

Here's some background info on the tasty add-ins:

Raisins: California, the only place in the United States that harvests the grapes used to make raisins, is the world's No. 1 supplier.

Pineapple: Thailand produces approximately 20 percent of the world's pineapple crop, surpassing the Hawaiian Islands.

Brazil nuts: The complex growing environment this tree crop requires prevents it from being grown on farms. Instead, it's harvested directly from the rain forests of Brazil, Peru, and other South American countries.

Chocolate: Africa's Ivory Coast is the largest producer of cocoa beans, the ingredient that gives chocolate its unique, irresistible flavor.

Coconut: The Philippines and Indonesia are the world's leading producers of copra, or coconut meat.

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
	1 1/2 cups baking mix (we used Bisquick)
	1 1/2 cups instant oats
	1 cup packed brown sugar
	1/2 cup softened butter
	1 egg
	1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
	Add-ins:
	Coconut flakes
	Chocolate chips
	Chopped dried pineapple
	Raisins
	Chopped Brazil nuts

1. Heat the oven to 350 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, combine the baking mix, oats, brown sugar, butter, egg, and cinnamon.
2. Stir the mix with a wooden spoon until you have a crumbly dough. Next, customize your international treats by folding in 1 cup total of the add-ins of your choice.
3. Press the dough into an ungreased 9- by 13-inch pan and bake for 17 minutes or until the center is set and the bars are slightly brown. Allow them to cool for 10 minutes before cutting. Makes 1-1/2 dozen 2- by 3-inch bars.

Pelham Court Hotel's Irish Soda Bread

Serving Size: about 16 Hungry Irishmen

Amount * Measure * Ingredient
-----------------------------
4 c Flour*
1 c Sugar
1 t Salt
2 ts Heaping baking powder
1 t Carraway seeds
1 Egg
Buttermilk
2 tb Butter**
1 1/2 c Raisins -- 2 fists
1/2 c Currants
1 c Mixed fruit -- (1/2 lb)
1/4 ts Baking soda

First, preheat oven to 400*F.
Soak both the raisins and the currants in hot water.
Put sugar in a large mixing bowl and cut the butter into it. Cut until it takes on a white cornmeal consistancy.
Next, add the caraway seeds.
Put flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda into the sifter and sift into the sugar and butter mix.
If you choose to add the mixed fruit, cut any amount of large pieces and mix into the flour mixture.
Drain the raisins and currants and dry well. Mix into the dry ingredients.
In a measuring cup, beat the egg with a fork. Then fill the cup with buttermilk. Mix lightly.
Next you want to make a hole in dry ingredients large enough to allow the milk and egg mix to be poured in. Mix well until everything is wet and starts to gradually pull away from the sides of the bowl. Add more liquid if needed.
Knead slightly to form into a round loaf.
Place loaf in a HOT iron frying pan which has been greased and floured.
Cut a large deep cross nearly through the loaf. Bake at 400*F for 10 minutes and lower temperature to 250*F for another 60 minutes.
Remove from oven and while still hot brush with a mixture of 5 TBS sugar and 1/4 cup evaporated milk (mixed well).
Place onto a rack when cool.

The summer of 2008 launched a new all suite hotel in Newport that will become the favorite of many. Located at the base of Pelham Street, the Pelham Court Hotel is just steps from Thames (Main) Street and right across the road from Bannister's Wharf with its shops and restaurants.

Constructed in 1870 as a carriage barn, Pelham Court Hotel's original building is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. Over the past year, the building has undergone extensive renovation and conversion into 8 luxury, one-bedroom suites. A complementary new building containing 2 one-bedroom suites, 1 two-bedroom suite and a large three-bedroom suite has been added to form a private courtyard with the original historic building. Suites are all in the 500+ sq. ft. range.

Late winter is a wonderful time to visit Newport, which enjoys above normal temperatures for the region. Spring is just around the corner. Find the first signs of spring in Newport with us.
